Toronto, November 6, 2025 – Having acquired the former Fleck Dance Theatre, The Toronto Stage Company is thrilled to announce that the first production in our new home will be Jason Robert Brown’s musical masterpiece THE LAST FIVE YEARS.

THE LAST FIVE YEARS explores a five-year relationship between Jamie, a rising novelist and Cathy, a struggling actress.  The show uniquely tells the story from opposing views and timelines.  Jamie’s story is told in chronological order (starting just after the couple first meet), while Cathy’s story is told in reverse (beginning the show at the end of the marriage).

“THE LAST FIVE YEARS is the perfect story to open our new home, The Terminal Theatre,” said Jon Chaters, founder and lead producer of The Toronto Stage Company. “The story is at once intimate and emotional, qualities that will be amplified in The Terminal Theatre, a venue where the median seat is just 20 feet from the stage, and at the actor’s eyeline.”

“2026 marks the 25th anniversary of THE LAST FIVE YEARS,” remarked director Luke Marty, “and yet Cathy and Jamie’s story is just as relevant today, perhaps even more so. The show’s themes of asymmetrical love, miscommunication, and the interplay of ambition and resentment have only been heightened in this era where digital isolation so often replaces true connection, and our lives are besieged by pandemics, instability, and an ever-increasing pace that challenges even the most secure relationships. By staging the show not only with chronologically, but also physically opposing paths, assailed by the demands of the virtual world, we aim to remain true to the original heart of the story, while updating it to reflect the difficulties of finding and losing love through our own, actual, last five years.”
