The Terminal Theatre is pleased to welcome the Doha Debates to our theatre with their town hall event Football fandom: Community or commodity? 

On July 8, international experts will join students and recent graduates from Qatar, Canada and Mexico to debate the question: What happens to football fandom when big money gets involved?

With our city currently hosting the World Cup, soccer (football) is at the forefront of our collective consciousness. Football fandom: Community or commodity? will be a fascinating discussion about how the sport has changed.

Globally speaking, twenty years ago, the football club you followed usually offered insight into where you came from. Today, Manchester United trades on the New York Stock Exchange and counts its followers in the hundreds of millions, most of them Asian and African nationals. Still, they cry when United loses. They fight in the comment sections. The sense of belonging is real—but what exactly do these fans belong to?

Moderator Imran Garda will be joined by Shireen Ahmed, a senior contributor at CBC Sports and co-owner of Lewes FC in East Sussex, England; David Goldblatt, a writer, historian and sociologist of football; and Kely Nascimento, president of Nascimento Foundation and co-founder of Hadaf Global, to discuss how football’s transformation into a global business is reshaping the meaning of the game and its fandom.

As more clubs are purchased by investors with little connection to the communities they represent, how are the bonds between supporters and their teams impacted? Is the commercialization of football creating a more inclusive and connected game, or turning loyalty into just another product to be bought and sold? And when fans are separated from their clubs by oceans, cultures, and continents, what does it really mean to belong?
